How to recover Android contacts? Did you know that Android is by far and away the most popular mobile phone operating system on the plant?  Did you also know that relatively speaking the percentage of users who have a problem with deleted contacts and SMS messages is also much higher on Android?  Whether it’s user error or just good intentions gone wrong there is likely going to be a time when most of us are going to have to recover some of our old Android data stored on our phone, not on our Google account.

How To Recover Android ContactsOne of the most common scenarios is that we find ourselves with a new mobile phone, get ourselves setup.  We decide it would be wise to wipe our old phone before either selling it on or maybe giving it away to friends and family.  We go to use our new phone only to discover that all the messages and contacts that we thought we’d migrated with our Google account weren’t there, they were stored on the Android phone we wiped!  How to you recover those Android contacts and SMS messages?

The first thing to try is to go on to your old phone and actually make sure that you had wiped the user data.  Some early Android phones had issues with wiping and you might get lucky and find your old contacts still there.  For SMS messages the odds are very much against this.

The second thing to try is to see if you had created a backup on your Google account.  This is sometimes set automatically, the process for restoration is pretty simple.  Sign in to your Google account on your new phone then-

  1. Go to your phones settings, Google
  2. Set up & Restore
  3. Restore Contacts

If you still don’t see your full list of contacts and if you desperately need your old SMS messages as well then we need to look for an alternative solution.  By far and away the cheapest and easiest ways of recovering your Android contacts and SMS messages is to use the Android Data Genius.  This simple Windows PC program will retrieve deleted contacts and SMS messages from an attached phone so that you can migrate them to your new phone.  If you’re your designated family “techie” then I’d strongly recommend it for when you get the inevitable “new phone, no contacts” question from the in-laws.  There’s no risk with this solution either, the free version will let you know what it can and can’t do before you commit to spending the few dollars on it.
